Students from CQJTU Attend Launch Ceremony of “Red Journey”

The national launch ceremony for this year’s “Youth Red Dream Building Journey” event of the 2024 China International College Students’ Innovation Competition was held at the General Assembly and Manufacturing Center of COMAC on June 12, 2024. The event inspired and encouraged students to plant their roots in China, endure challenges, explore the world, and develop their talents through innovative practice.

Huai Jinpeng, Secretary of the CPC Leading Group of the Ministry of Education, attended and delivered a speech. Wu Yan, a member of the Leading Group and Vice Minister of the Ministry of Education, presented the flag to the students embarking on the “Red Journey,” while Xie Dong, Vice Mayor of Shanghai, also participated in the ceremony.

Representatives from key departments and organizations, including the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Ministry of Finance, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, as well as officials from local education administrative bodies, Shanghai municipal departments, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and COMAC, joined teachers and students from across the country in attending the ceremony.

In his speech, Minister Huai Jinpeng emphasized that students participating in the “Red Journey” not only sharpen their skills but also cultivate their spirit. He urged the youth to remain steadfast in their ideals and convictions, valuing both their country and their families. By exploring the nation’s developmental history and actively contributing to its progress, they can grasp the essence of historical and ancestral practices. This, in turn, will enable them to align their aspirations with the country’s development and the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. Minister Huai also referenced President Xi Jinping’s 2017 message to students involved in the “Red Journey,” in which the President encouraged them to stay grounded in China, understand its realities, and make meaningful contributions to society.

Before the launch ceremony, the organizers conducted a nationwide selection of projects, ultimately choosing five for the exhibition. During the ceremony, representatives from these projects passionately shared their experiences under the theme “My Position is in the Countryside, Workshop, Desert, Sea, and Sky.” They discussed their hands-on work in fields such as rural healthcare, smart manufacturing, environmental sustainability, and marine and aerospace technology, demonstrating how today’s Chinese youth are responding to national priorities and contributing to the goals of the Party and the people.

The event also featured a digital avatar of Qian Xuesen, the Father of Chinese Aerospace and a renowned rocket scientist and Caltech alumnus, who delivered a speech titled “My Position is in China.” In his address, he urged students to carry forward the spirit of earlier generations of scientists and to persistently strive to contribute to the nation. The five project groups collectively presented a dynamic and multifaceted lesson that blended historical education, innovative practices, rural revitalization, and the realization of dreams.

During the event, three students from CQJTU’s “Desert Soilization” research team—PhD students Nie Qixia and Ru Nan, specializing in ecological mechanics, and undergraduate Zhu Tangwei, from the ecological mechanics-focused class—presented on the theme “My Position is in the Desert” for a green environment. They shared their innovative approaches and achievements in “desert soilization” for ecosystem management, highlighting their role in supporting the development of ecological industries. The team demonstrated the process of transforming sand into soil and shared inspiring stories of how they dedicated their youth and efforts to the remote deserts and ethnic regions of China. Their work contributes to the establishment of ecological civilization, rural revitalization, and the pursuit of green, high-quality development. According to reports, developed by the research team at CQJTU, Desert Soilization is a groundbreaking technology that mechanically binds the surface layer of desert sand to create a novel material with soil-like mechanical properties and enhanced water retention, promoting plant growth. This innovative solution contributes to desertification control, ecological restoration, and industrial development. Since 2016, the technology has been successfully applied across a variety of landforms and climates, including the Taklimakan Desert, Ulan Buh Desert, desertified grasslands, the deserts of the Middle East and Sahara, the Gobi Desert, beach sand, and coral sand. To date, a total of 2,667 hectares have been soilized through this technology.

The team holds independent intellectual property rights and has been granted 18 domestic invention patents and 8 international invention patents. Their technological R&D and application achievements have earned numerous accolades, including the First Prize for Innovation Achievement from the China Industry-University-Research Collaboration Promotion Association, the prestigious international “Earthshot Prize,” and the title of “Most Outstanding Eco-Environmentalist in Chongqing,” among others.
