On December 3, the award ceremony for the “Most Outstanding Eco-environmentalist” in Chongqing was broadcast on Chongqing TV. The ceremony was jointly organized by the Publicity Department of the Chongqing Municipal Committee of the CPC, the Municipal Civilization Office, and the Chongqing Ecology and Environment Bureau. The ceremony recognized two teams and eight individuals who have made significant contributions to the city’s environmental protection efforts.

One of the winners was the “Desert Soilization” technology research team from CQJTU. Zhang Ming, Vice President of CQJTU, attended the ceremony in support. Professor Yi Zhijian, the team leader, along with several team members, received the “Most Outstanding Eco-environmentalist ” trophy and certificate on stage and provided a brief overview of the team’s achievements.

In August, the Publicity Department of the Chongqing Municipal Committee of the CPC, the Municipal Civilization Office, and the Chongqing Ecology and Environment Bureau jointly launched the 2023 Chongqing “Most Outstanding Eco-environmentalist” selection and promotional activities. The selection aimed to recognize individuals and teams from various sectors who have made significant contributions to environmental protection across the city. After a thorough recommendation and evaluation process, 10 honorees were selected from 63 candidates.

Among the two awarded teams, the research team from CQJTU pioneered the fundamental theory and core technology of “Desert Soilization.” Since 2016, the team has conducted large-scale ecological restoration experiments and applications in over 20 regions with diverse landforms, both in China and abroad, including the Ulan Buh Desert in Inner Mongolia, the Taklamakan Desert in Xinjiang, the Dubai Desert in the Middle East, and the Sahara Desert in Niger, Africa. The total area covered has exceeded 30,000 mu (approximately 2,000 hectares), yielding remarkable results in desertification control. Their work of significant strategic importance for desertification control, ecological civilization, green and high-quality development, rural revitalization, food security, land use, ecosystem carbon sequestration, and the Belt and Road Initiative.

This was the first time since the establishment of the award in 2021 that a team or individual from CQJTU has received this award.
